How to Pollard a Tree - A Complete UK Guide

Pollarding is one of the oldest tree management practices in Britain. Evidence of pollarded trees appears in records going back over a thousand years - ancient pollard oaks in places like Epping Forest and Sherwood Forest are living examples of a technique that, done correctly, can extend a tree's life dramatically rather than shorten it. The Ancient Tree Forum notes that some of Britain's oldest and most ecologically valuable trees are ancient pollards - specimens that have been regularly cut for centuries.

Today, most people pollard trees not for timber or fodder - the historical reasons - but to manage size in gardens, streets and urban spaces. It is an effective technique when applied correctly. But applied to the wrong species, at the wrong time, or on a tree that has never been pollarded before, it can cause serious and irreversible damage.

What Pollarding Actually Is (and Is Not)

Pollarding means removing all or most of the branch growth back to a set of established cut points on the main trunk or primary branches - known as the pollard head or bolling. The tree then re-grows from those points, producing a flush of new shoots that are cut back again on a regular cycle.

This is different from crown reduction, which reduces the overall size of the canopy while retaining its natural shape and branch structure. It is also different from topping - the indiscriminate cutting of a tree back to stubs - which is widely recognised as harmful practice and which the Royal Horticultural Society advises against. Pollarding is a deliberate, species-appropriate management technique with a defined long-term cycle. Topping is not.

The distinction matters because the cuts made in proper pollarding are to points the tree has previously responded to - established pollard heads that the tree's internal systems know how to deal with. The wounds are smaller, the response is predictable, and the process becomes safer and more effective with each repeat cycle.

Key principle: Pollarding works because of compartmentalisation - the tree's biological mechanism for containing the damage of a cut wound and preventing decay from spreading. Species that pollard well are those with strong compartmentalisation responses. Those that do not pollard well either cannot compartmentalise large wounds effectively or do not produce the vigorous epicormic regrowth that pollarding depends on.

Which Trees Can Be Pollarded?

Species suitability is the single most important factor in deciding whether to pollard. Getting this wrong can kill a tree or leave it structurally compromised. The table below summarises the most common species you are likely to encounter in UK gardens and urban settings.

Willow (Salix spp.) Excellent The classic pollarding subject. Responds vigorously, heals well, tolerates very hard cutting. Ideal species for first-time pollarding.
Lime (Tilia spp.) Excellent Very commonly pollarded in streets and parks. Produces prolific epicormic growth. Some people find the resultant base sprouting a nuisance but it is easily managed.
London plane (Platanus x hispanica) Excellent Widely pollarded across the UK and Europe. Tolerates very hard cutting and large wounds well. Often pollarded on a 3-5 year cycle in street settings.
Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) Good Traditionally pollarded for fencing stakes and fodder. Responds well when started on younger trees. Note: ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) has devastated many ash trees - check health before committing to a long-term management programme.
Oak (Quercus spp.) Good Pollard oaks are among Britain's most ecologically valuable trees. Best started young. Pollard in midsummer (June-July) to reduce bleeding and oak processionary moth risk. Ancient pollard oaks can live for many hundreds of years.
Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) With care Can be pollarded but is prone to decay at large cut wounds. Better started young. Avoid if the tree already has bleeding canker disease.
Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) With care Will respond to pollarding but produces a more variable result than the top-tier species. Best kept to younger trees with smaller cut wounds.
Silver birch (Betula pendula) With care Birch is not a natural pollarding subject and responds poorly to large cuts. Light pollarding of young trees can work, but it is not the ideal management approach for birch.
Conifers (pine, spruce, fir, Leyland cypress etc.) Not suitable Conifers cannot regenerate from old wood. Cutting back into bare wood kills the branch. They cannot be pollarded - see our guide on conifer management.
Cherry and other Prunus Not suitable Members of the Prunus family (cherry, plum, blackthorn) are very susceptible to silver leaf disease, which enters through pruning wounds. Large cuts on these trees are high risk. Pollarding is not recommended.

When to Pollard in the UK

Timing varies by species, but the general guidance for most trees is late winter - February to early March - when the tree is still dormant but the hardest frosts have typically passed. Cutting during full dormancy means the tree can put its energy into vigorous new growth as soon as the growing season starts, and cold temperatures slow the development of fungal pathogens that might otherwise exploit fresh wounds.

Species-specific exceptions to the late-winter rule:

  • Oak - pollard in midsummer (June to July) rather than winter. This reduces the risk of bacterial bleeding and, increasingly importantly, avoids the peak flight period of the oak processionary moth, whose nests and caterpillars (present from April to July) are a significant health hazard.   • Prunus species (if you must cut) - if cutting is unavoidable on cherry or plum trees, midsummer is slightly lower risk than winter because silver leaf spores are less prevalent then. This is not an endorsement of pollarding these species.
  • Willow - tolerates cutting at almost any time of year, though late winter remains preferable.

Never pollard during extended frost. Freshly made cuts are highly vulnerable to frost damage. If a hard frost is forecast within a few days of planned work, postpone it. In Sheffield and South Yorkshire, late frosts can arrive well into March - check the forecast and be prepared to adjust timing.

Pollarding for the First Time vs Re-Pollarding

This distinction is critical and is where most mistakes happen.

First pollarding - establishing the pollard head

When a tree is being pollarded for the first time, the goal is to establish the pollard head at a height that makes sense for the long term - typically 2 to 4 metres from the ground for a garden tree, though this depends on the species and context. The initial cut removes the entire upper canopy back to this height, leaving the trunk with a set of well-placed branch stubs from which the regrowth will emerge.

The critical requirement for a first pollard is that the tree is young enough for the wounds to remain manageable. If the trunk diameter at the cut point is already very large - say, 30cm or more - the wounds produced will be substantial, will take a long time to occlude (seal over), and will be far more likely to develop decay. A first pollard on a young tree, with a trunk diameter of perhaps 10 to 20cm at the cut height, produces wounds that heal relatively quickly and establishes a clean pollard head for decades of future management.

First pollarding a large, mature tree that has never previously been managed this way is a high-risk operation. The large wounds and the shock of losing most of its canopy at once can be fatal for many species. This is a job for a qualified arborist who can assess the tree's likely response.

Re-pollarding an established pollard

Re-pollarding - cutting back an already-established pollard - is a much lower-risk operation, provided the cycle has been maintained and the new growth being removed is not too large or too old. The tree already knows how to respond to cuts at the pollard head; the wounds are made to points with a proven healing response. This is the routine maintenance phase that a well-managed pollard enters after its first few cycles.

The danger arises when a pollard has been left too long between cycles. As the regrowth gets larger - say, branches of 15 to 20cm diameter arising from the pollard head - the structural attachment of those branches becomes weaker (they are often attached to decayed wood inside the bolling), the cut wounds become progressively larger, and the shock to the tree of losing a very heavy canopy at once becomes greater. Ideally, cut before the regrowth reaches more than about 10cm diameter at the base.

Tools and Equipment

The right tools make pollarding work safer, faster and better for the tree:

  • Pruning saw. For branches up to around 10cm diameter, a quality hand pruning saw is the right tool. Curved Silky or Bahco saws are popular with professionals for their cutting speed and control.
  • Loppers. For smaller regrowth - stems up to 3 to 4cm - sharp bypass loppers are faster and produce cleaner cuts than a saw.
  • Chainsaw. For branches over roughly 10cm diameter or for volume of work, a chainsaw is more efficient - but only in the hands of someone trained and certificated to use one safely. Chainsaw use requires appropriate PPE and, for professional use, certificated training (typically NPTC/LANTRA).
  • PPE. At minimum: safety glasses or goggles, gloves, and a hard hat when working beneath any branch that could fall. If using a chainsaw: full chainsaw PPE including chaps/trousers, gloves, helmet with visor and hearing protection.
  • Ladder or access equipment. Working at height requires care. A ladder is acceptable for lower pollard heads but anything above 3 to 4 metres really warrants a tower scaffold, MEWP (cherry picker) or working from a rope system - none of which are DIY territory. The HSE work at height guidance requires that ladders only be used where the risk assessment supports it - for short-duration, low-risk tasks at modest heights.
  • Disinfectant. Clean cutting tools between trees with a dilute bleach solution or methylated spirits to prevent transmitting disease - particularly important where ash dieback, silver leaf or other pathogens are present.

How to Pollard a Tree - Step by Step

The following steps assume you are re-pollarding an established pollard with regrowth of manageable size (stems under 10cm diameter at the base). First pollarding of a mature tree should be done by a professional.

  1. Check for a TPO and assess the tree Before any work begins, confirm the tree is not subject to a Tree Preservation Order (see our TPO guide) and assess its overall health. Look for signs of disease, structural weakness in the bolling, and check that the regrowth is of manageable size and age.
  2. Plan your cuts Identify all the regrowth stems arising from the pollard head. Plan to remove all of them back to the bolling, cutting just above the swollen collar at the base of each stem. Walk around the tree before starting to identify access, the order you will work in, and where cut material will fall.
  3. Work from the outside in Start with the outermost and lower branches, removing them first to open up access to inner and upper stems. This reduces the chance of a falling branch snagging on others as it comes down.
  4. Make clean cuts just above the collar Cut each stem cleanly at its base, just outside the branch collar - the slight swelling where the stem meets the bolling. Do not cut flush into the bolling itself (this damages the healing tissue) and do not leave long stubs (which die back and become disease entry points). Aim for a cut that leaves the collar intact and slopes slightly away from the bolling to shed water.
  5. For larger stems, use the three-cut method On any stem large enough to risk tearing the bark as it falls (roughly over 5cm diameter), use the three-cut method: first cut partially through from below (the undercut) about 30cm from the bolling, then cut from above further out to remove the bulk of the stem, then make the final clean cut to the collar. This prevents the weight of the falling stem tearing bark and wood from the bolling.
  6. Clear and inspect as you go Remove cut material regularly so you can move safely around the base of the tree. After each major cut, glance at the bolling to check for any signs of internal decay exposed by the cut - soft wood, discolouration or fungal tissue. If significant decay is found, stop and reassess.
  7. Final inspection Once all regrowth has been removed, step back and inspect the pollard head from all sides. Every cut surface should be clean, close to the collar, and angled to shed water. There should be no stubs, torn bark or exposed decayed wood that you have not already identified and reported.

On wound sealants: Modern arboricultural practice does not routinely recommend wound sealants on pollarding cuts. Research has found that sealants can trap moisture and slow the development of the callus tissue that naturally seals a wound. Clean cuts made with sharp tools on healthy, appropriate species will seal themselves. The exception sometimes cited is the risk of silver leaf on Prunus species - but as noted above, those species should not be pollarded in the first place.

What to Expect Afterwards

In the first growing season after pollarding, the tree will put significant energy into producing new shoots from the pollard head. This regrowth is typically very vigorous - willow and lime in particular can push 1 to 2 metres of new growth in the first year. The number of shoots produced is usually much higher than will ultimately be retained; this is normal and the excess thins naturally over time or can be selectively removed at the next cycle.

The tree may look stark immediately after pollarding - a bare trunk with a stumpy head. This is expected and temporary. Within a few months of the spring growing season, the new flush of growth will be well established and the tree will look noticeably different. Within a year or two, it will typically be carrying a full, leafy canopy of new growth again.

On established pollards with healthy bollings, the callus tissue around the cut wounds begins to develop within weeks of cutting and is often visible by summer. This rim of new tissue slowly grows over the cut surface, eventually occluding the wound entirely - a process that may take several years on larger cuts.

Establishing an Ongoing Pollard Cycle

The most important thing about pollarding is that it is not a one-off event. Once you start pollarding a tree, you are committing to managing it on a regular cycle for its lifetime. Abandoning the cycle once it is established creates significant problems: the regrowth becomes large and structurally weak, the next cut must remove more material than is ideal, and the risk of decay and structural failure at the bolling increases.

Typical cycle lengths depend on species and vigour:

  • Willow: 2-3 years
  • Lime: 3-5 years
  • London plane: 3-5 years
  • Ash: 3-7 years
  • Oak: 5-10 years or longer

These are indicative - observe your tree. If the regrowth is heavy and the stems are getting large, shorten the cycle. If growth is slow and modest, the interval can be extended slightly. The practical guide is: cut before any individual stem from the pollard head exceeds roughly 10cm in diameter at its base.

The Woodland Trust notes that trees under active management - including well-maintained pollards - often outlive their unmanaged counterparts by centuries. Ancient pollards carry enormous ecological value, providing habitat for hundreds of species of insects, fungi, lichens and birds that depend on old wood and decay features that managed trees alone cannot provide.

Check for a TPO Before You Start

If your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order, you need written consent from your local council before carrying out any pollarding - whether it is a first pollard or a routine re-pollard. This applies even where the work is clearly beneficial maintenance.

Consent for routine re-pollarding of established pollards is generally straightforward to obtain - councils are usually supportive of proper ongoing management - but you must apply and receive a decision before any work begins.

Trees in conservation areas are also subject to restrictions even without a specific TPO. Six weeks' written notice to the council is required before any significant work.

When to Use a Professional

Many re-pollards of small to medium garden trees are within the capability of a competent, safety-conscious homeowner. But there are situations where professional involvement is clearly the right choice:

  • First pollarding of any tree. Establishing the initial pollard head - particularly on a tree of any meaningful size - involves making large cuts on a tree that has not previously been managed this way. The risk of a poor outcome is much higher than with a routine re-pollard, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be permanent. A qualified arborist can assess whether the tree is a suitable candidate, determine the right height for the pollard head, and carry out the work with the skill and equipment needed.
  • Large or tall trees. Working safely at height with cutting tools, managing the controlled descent of heavy stems, and handling the volume of material produced by a large pollard all require professional equipment and training. The HSE is clear that working at height with chainsaws requires appropriate certification and PPE. Attempting this as a DIY project on a large tree creates serious risk of injury.
  • Pollards that have been left too long. If the pollard cycle has been missed for many years and the regrowth has become large and heavy, assessing the condition of the bolling and carrying out the work safely requires professional expertise. Significant internal decay in the bolling may mean the tree is no longer a viable pollard candidate at all.
  • Any signs of significant disease or decay. If you find soft wood, discolouration, bracket fungi or other signs of decay during work, stop and get a professional assessment before continuing. The structural implications of decay at a pollard head can be serious.
  • TPO trees. A qualified arborist will handle the consent application and carry out the work to the standard required by the council's conditions.
