Tree surgery covers a broad range of techniques designed to improve the health, structure, safety and appearance of your trees. Unlike tree removal - which takes a tree out entirely - tree surgery is about working with what you have, making targeted interventions that help a tree thrive in its location for years to come.
Our team of NPTC qualified tree surgeons assesses every tree individually. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to tree care. The right treatment depends on the species, the tree's current condition, its position, and what you are trying to achieve. We will always explain what we recommend and why before any work starts.
All our tree surgery is carried out to British Standard BS 3998 - the industry standard for tree work in the UK. This ensures cuts are made correctly, in the right positions, so your trees can seal over wounds effectively and maintain their long-term health.

Tree Surgery Techniques We Use
Depending on what your tree needs, we may recommend one or more of the following:
- Crown thinning - removing a proportion of the smaller branches evenly throughout the canopy to increase light and air movement without altering the tree's overall shape or size
- Crown lifting - removing the lower branches of the crown to increase clearance beneath the tree - useful for access, light to the ground, or proximity to buildings
- Deadwooding - removing dead, dying or structurally unsound branches that pose a risk of falling
- Formative pruning - shaping young trees as they establish to encourage a sound, balanced structure and prevent problems later in life
- Structural pruning - targeted work on mature trees to reduce the risk of failure by removing co-dominant stems, reducing end weight on overextended branches, or addressing included bark unions
Why Correct Pruning Matters
Trees are living organisms, and incorrect pruning can do lasting damage. Cuts made in the wrong place - leaving stubs or flush cuts - disrupt the natural defence mechanisms trees use to compartmentalise wounds. This leads to decay spreading into the main trunk, which can seriously compromise the tree's structural integrity over time.
Our surgeons understand tree biology as well as technique. Every cut we make is considered - where it sits on the branch, its size, and how the tree is likely to respond. This approach, guided by BS 3998, gives your trees the best chance of remaining healthy and structurally sound after surgery.
Tree Surgery in Sheffield's Urban and Suburban Environment
Sheffield is home to a remarkable number of trees for a city its size - in parks, gardens, streets and woodlands throughout the city. Many are mature specimens that have grown large over decades. Managing these trees well - through regular, appropriate surgery - keeps them safe, preserves their amenity value, and avoids the need for removal.
We work across all parts of Sheffield and South Yorkshire, from small terraced gardens with a single cherry tree to large rural properties managing areas of semi-mature woodland. Whatever the scale, we bring the same attention to detail and professional approach to every job.

Tree Surgery Questions
Tree surgery is a broad term that covers a range of pruning and maintenance techniques used to improve a tree's health, structure, safety or appearance. Common types include crown thinning (reducing branch density), crown lifting (raising the lower canopy), deadwooding (removing dead or unsafe branches), formative pruning (shaping young trees) and structural pruning (targeted work to reduce the risk of failure in mature trees). The right approach depends on your tree's condition and what you want to achieve.
Most tree surgery can be carried out year-round, but the ideal timing depends on the species and the type of work needed. Late autumn through to early spring - when trees are dormant - is often a good time for major structural work, as it is easier to see the branch structure clearly and the tree is better placed to recover. However, some species benefit from summer pruning, and deadwooding or hazard removal can be done at any time. We will advise you on the best timing for your specific tree when we provide a quote.
Correctly carried out tree surgery, following BS 3998 guidelines, should support rather than harm your tree's health. Making cuts in the right positions allows the tree to compartmentalise wounds and continue growing vigorously. Poorly executed pruning - stubs, flush cuts, or removing too much foliage at once - can stress the tree and introduce decay. This is why using qualified, experienced tree surgeons matters. We work to the industry standard on every job.
Common signs that a tree may benefit from surgery include: dead or hanging branches, branches growing too close to a building or roof, a very dense crown that is blocking light, crossing branches that are rubbing together and causing wounds, a lopsided or unbalanced structure, or signs of disease or dieback. If you are unsure, get in touch and we will carry out a free assessment and give you honest advice about what - if anything - the tree actually needs.
In most cases, no - routine tree surgery on your own trees does not require planning permission. However, if your tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or is within a Conservation Area, you will need to notify Sheffield City Council and may need consent before work is carried out. We can check this for you and advise you on any restrictions before we start work. We never begin any job without being confident the necessary consents are in place.
