Tree felling is the process of bringing a tree down to ground level. It sounds straightforward, but in practice it requires careful planning, specialist equipment and trained operators to carry out safely - particularly in the gardens, streets and confined spaces typical of residential Sheffield.
Our NPTC qualified team has extensive experience felling trees of all sizes and species across South Yorkshire. We assess each job individually, choosing the felling method that is safest for the site and the people working on it.

Straight Felling vs Sectional Dismantling
The two main methods of tree felling are directional felling and sectional dismantling. Each has its place:
- Directional (straight) felling is used where there is sufficient clear space for the tree to fall in a controlled direction. The tree is notched and felled using a chainsaw, with wedges and ropes used to control the direction of fall precisely. This is the most efficient method where site conditions allow.
- Sectional dismantling is used in confined spaces - typical of many Sheffield gardens - where there is no room for the tree to fall in one piece. A climber works up into the tree and removes it piece by piece from the top down, lowering sections safely to the ground using ropes and rigging equipment. This method takes longer but protects lawns, fences, sheds and surrounding plants from damage.
Safety First - How We Protect Your Property
Before any felling work begins, we carry out a full site assessment. This covers:
- The size, species and condition of the tree
- The available drop zone and what surrounds it
- Ground conditions and any underground services nearby
- Proximity to buildings, fences, garden structures and neighbouring properties
- Access requirements for machinery and timber clearance
During the work, exclusion zones are established around the work area to keep anyone not involved in the operation at a safe distance. We use appropriate rigging and lowering systems to control every section of timber as it comes down.

Timber: What Happens to the Wood?

Tree Felling Questions
Tree felling refers specifically to the act of bringing a tree down to ground level - either by directional felling or sectional dismantling. Tree removal is a broader term that includes the felling plus all the subsequent clearance work: removing the timber, chipping the branches, and cutting the stump. In practice, most customers want both together, and our quotes include full clearance as standard.
Yes. This is one of the most common scenarios we deal with in Sheffield's residential areas. Where there is no room to fell the tree in one piece, we use sectional dismantling - taking the tree down piece by piece from the top using a climber with ropes and rigging. This controlled method means sections of timber are lowered safely rather than dropped, protecting buildings, fences and garden features below. We use ground protection matting where needed to protect lawns and planted areas.
In most cases you do not need planning permission to fell a tree on your own property. However, if the tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or is within a Conservation Area, you will need to apply to Sheffield City Council for consent before any felling work takes place. Felling a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence. We always check the position before starting work and will advise you if any consents are required.
It depends on the size of the tree, the method being used and the access available. A small to medium garden tree can often be felled and cleared in half a day. A large tree requiring full sectional dismantling in a tight garden could take a full day or longer. We will give you a realistic time estimate when we come to quote. We aim to complete jobs in a single visit wherever possible.
All timber and brash is removed from site as part of our standard service. Branches are chipped using our wood chipper, and logs are either chipped or loaded and taken away. If you would prefer to keep the timber - for log burner firewood, for instance - just let us know when we quote. We can cut logs to your preferred length and leave them neatly stacked. Woodchip can also be left on site as mulch for borders and beds if useful.
