Ecclesall is one of the most tree-rich areas of Sheffield. The wide residential streets, large Victorian and Edwardian gardens, and proximity to Ecclesall Woods mean that mature trees are a defining feature of the neighbourhood - and that tree surgery is a regular requirement for local homeowners.
We carry out tree surgery, crown reduction, tree removal, stump grinding, hedge trimming and emergency call-outs across Ecclesall and the streets running off it. If you have a tree that needs attention - whether that's bringing it under control, making it safer, or removing it altogether - we can help.
All our work is carried out by NPTC qualified tree surgeons with full public liability insurance. We provide a free written quote before any work starts, and we will always give you honest advice about what your tree actually needs.

Working in Ecclesall - What We See Here
Ecclesall's tree stock reflects its history as a prosperous Victorian suburb. Many of the larger properties along Ecclesall Road, Ringinglow Road and the roads off them have gardens that were planted a century or more ago, with oak, beech, lime, sycamore and horse chestnut now reaching significant sizes. These trees are frequently the source of neighbour disputes over light, overhang and leaf fall - and managing them requires care and experience.
We regularly carry out crown reduction work on large, established trees across Ecclesall - bringing canopy size back under control without removing the tree entirely. Done correctly to British Standard BS 3998, a well-planned crown reduction will last several years before further work is needed.
Tree Removal in Ecclesall
Not every tree can be saved, and sometimes removal is the right call - particularly where a tree is dead, diseased, or structurally compromised. Access in Ecclesall is generally good for a suburban area, though gardens behind large detached houses can present challenges. We have the equipment and experience to remove trees safely in tight spaces and close proximity to buildings.
Parts of Ecclesall fall within Conservation Areas or have trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). If you are unsure whether your tree is subject to any restrictions, we can check for you and advise you before any work starts. Working on a TPO tree without permission from Sheffield City Council is a criminal offence, so it is important to confirm the position before proceeding.
Hedge Trimming in Ecclesall
Many Ecclesall properties have established boundary hedges - privet, beech, laurel and hawthorn are all common - that need regular trimming to stay manageable and tidy. We trim hedges of all sizes and can carry out one-off reductions on hedges that have been left to grow out of control. All cuttings are removed from site.

Tree Surgery Questions - Ecclesall
Parts of Ecclesall are within Sheffield Conservation Areas, and some trees are subject to Tree Preservation Orders. In a Conservation Area you are required to give Sheffield City Council six weeks' written notice before felling or carrying out major work on any tree with a trunk diameter of 75mm or more. TPO trees require a formal application. We can check the position for your specific tree and advise you before any work starts.
You have the legal right to cut back branches and roots that encroach on your property up to the boundary line, but you cannot cut beyond it. Any cuttings technically remain the property of the tree owner. It is always worth speaking to your neighbour first, as they may be happy to have the work done. If the overhanging branches are causing damage, your neighbour may be liable. We can cut back overhanging branches from your side of the boundary safely and to a good standard.
Ecclesall is well within our regular working area and we are usually able to offer a free quote visit within 2-3 working days. For emergency situations - a tree down after a storm, a branch fallen on a structure - we aim to respond the same day or next day.
Yes - we can assess the situation and carry out the appropriate work, whether that is crown reduction to reduce water uptake, or removal if necessary. If you suspect a tree is causing subsidence we would recommend speaking to your buildings insurer first, as they may want to instruct a structural engineer to assess the situation before any tree work is carried out.
Ecclesall Woods is managed by Sheffield City Council and the Sheffield Wildlife Trust - work in the woods is carried out by their teams rather than private contractors. We work on private residential and commercial properties in and around Ecclesall, not in the woods themselves.
