Professional Stump Grinding Across Sheffield

Once a tree has been removed, the stump left behind is more than just an eyesore. It takes up space, gets in the way of garden use, and can cause a number of ongoing problems if left in place. Stump grinding is the most effective way to deal with a tree stump - and we carry it out quickly, cleanly and with minimal disruption to your garden.

We use specialist stump grinding machinery to grind stumps down below ground level, removing the bulk of the stump and the top section of the root system. The result is a hollow in the ground filled with wood chip and soil, which can be backfilled and levelled, leaving a surface ready for turfing, planting or paving.

Stump grinding can be booked as part of a tree removal or felling job, or carried out separately on existing stumps - whether they were left by a previous contractor or from a tree that came down years ago.

Why Leaving a Stump Is a Problem

It might be tempting to leave a stump in place and forget about it. But there are good reasons to have it removed properly:

  • Regrowth - many species will send up new shoots from the stump and roots. Willows, sycamores, limes and elders are particularly vigorous. Left unchecked, this regrowth can quickly become a new tree problem.
  • Honey fungus - decaying stumps are a known host for honey fungus (Armillaria species), a destructive fungal pathogen that can spread through root systems to infect and kill surrounding trees and woody plants in your garden.
  • Trip hazard - a stump at or below lawn level is a hidden hazard for anyone walking across the garden.
  • Lawn maintenance - stumps make mowing awkward and can damage lawnmower blades if not clearly visible.
  • Wasted space - stumps take up ground that could be used for planting, seating or paving.

How Deep Do We Grind?

As standard, we grind stumps to approximately 150-300mm (6-12 inches) below the existing ground level. This is sufficient for most purposes - including turfing and replanting. If you are planning to lay paving, build a structure or plant a new tree in the same spot, we may need to grind deeper, and we will discuss this with you at the quotation stage.

Access and Machinery

Our stump grinders range in size from compact tracked machines that can access gardens through a standard gate (from around 750mm wide) to larger units for open sites. We will confirm access requirements when we come to quote and select the most suitable machine for the job. We use ground protection boards where needed to protect lawns and driveways.

What Happens to the Grindings?

Stump grinding produces a quantity of wood chip mixed with soil - the grindings. These are left in and around the hollow left by the stump. They can be:

  • Used to backfill the hole and levelled off, ready for turf or topsoil
  • Used as garden mulch around beds and borders
  • Removed from site if you prefer a completely clear finish

Just let us know your preference when booking and we will plan accordingly.

Stump Grinding Questions

As standard we grind to approximately 150-300mm below existing ground level, which is sufficient for turfing and most planting. If you are planning to lay hard landscaping such as patios or paths over the area, or want to plant a new tree in the same location, a deeper grind may be advisable. We will discuss the best approach for your plans at the quotation stage and price accordingly.

Yes, you can replant after stump grinding. However, it is worth waiting a little while - the wood chip grindings left in the hollow will decompose over time and the ground may settle. For best results, backfill the hollow with good quality topsoil mixed with some compost, allow it to settle over a growing season, then plant. Planting a new tree of the same species in the exact same spot is generally not recommended as soil conditions may not be ideal and any residual disease in the old root system could affect the new tree.

The grinding process produces a mix of wood chip and soil from the stump. This material is left in and around the hole. You can use it to backfill and level the area, spread it as garden mulch around borders and trees, or we can remove it from site if you prefer. Just let us know your preference when you book. Note that fresh wood chip grindings are not suitable for use in vegetable beds as they can temporarily tie up nitrogen in the soil as they decompose.

In most cases yes. Our compact tracked stump grinders can access most gardens through a standard gate opening of around 750mm or wider. For narrower access points we can sometimes dismantle a fence panel temporarily to gain entry. Larger stumps in open areas can be tackled with our bigger machines. We always check access requirements when we visit to quote, so there are no surprises on the day.

Stump grinding removes the stump and the top section of the main root structure directly beneath it - typically to the depth we are grinding. Lateral roots that extend out from the stump across the garden are generally left in place, as they will naturally decay over time without causing significant problems. If surface roots are a specific concern - such as roots lifting a driveway or paving - let us know and we can discuss the options available.
