What Happens If You Cut the Top Off a Conifer?
The short answer, for most conifers, is: permanent damage. The cut exposes bare wood with no foliage-bearing tissue around or above it. The stub turns brown and dry within weeks. There is no new leader - no shoot that will grow upward to replace the removed top.
Months later - dieback
The branches closest to the cut, having lost the hormonal signal from the main growing tip, often begin to die back as well. The dead zone may spread downward over months and years, worsening the appearance.
Long term - no recovery
For species like Leylandii, there is no natural recovery. The tree will continue to grow outward from the remaining lateral branches at the sides, but there will be no new top. The silhouette is permanently altered - a flat, dead-topped shape.
Structural risk
A topped conifer often becomes structurally weakened over time. Lateral branches may attempt to take on a dominant role, creating poorly attached multiple stems that are more vulnerable to wind damage than a single intact leader.
The appearance problem is significant. A topped Leylandii hedge does not look managed - it looks damaged. The flat brown top with a ragged edge is immediately obvious, and it does not improve with time.
Species by Species - Which Can Recover, Which Cannot

What to Do If It Has Already Been Topped
If the damage has already been done, your options depend on which species is involved and how badly it has been cut.
If it is a yew - you are in the best possible position. Yew will re-grow from even severe cuts. New growth will emerge from the cut surface and surrounding bark, and over several years the tree will recover a more natural shape. The process is slow but reliable.
If it is a Thuja (Western Red Cedar) - assess how much green foliage remains below the cut. If there is still a substantial amount of green growth, the tree may continue to develop acceptably even if the original leader has been lost. The remaining lateral branches will gradually fill the space. If the cut has gone deep into completely bare brown wood, the prognosis is similar to Leylandii.
If it is a Leylandii or Lawson cypress - the honest answer is that there is no recovery path for the topped portion. The realistic options are:
- Accept and manage the current height. Keep the sides trimmed annually and accept that the top will remain flat and brown. Over time, lateral branches at the top may partly obscure the cut stub, though they will not form a new pointed leader.
- Remove and replace. For many homeowners this is the most practical long-term solution. A topped Leylandii hedge that is already at an unmanageable height is rarely going to improve. Removal followed by replanting with a more suitable, slower-growing species gives a clean start.
- Reduce the whole hedge to a manageable height. If the hedge is being reduced in height anyway, a professional can cut it down to a point where there is still living green foliage. This is a much more drastic reduction than most people anticipate but may be better than leaving a damaged top in place.
There is no product or treatment that reverses this damage. No feed, wound sealant, or growth stimulant will cause a topped Leylandii to produce a new leader. If someone suggests otherwise, treat that advice with scepticism.
How to Properly Reduce a Conifer's Height
If a conifer has grown too tall and you need to reduce it, the right approach depends on the species.
For yew, holly, and Thuja - these can tolerate a meaningful height reduction as long as the cuts are made cleanly and the tree is in good health. For yew, reduction can be quite severe. For Thuja, stay within the green zone where possible and do not cut into completely bare stem.
For Leylandii, Lawson cypress, and most other conifers - height reduction is very limited. You can reduce the sides significantly and this is the correct approach for managing a hedge that is too wide. For height, the only safe approach is to reduce to a point where there is still living, green, foliage-bearing growth above the cut. If the tree is already taller than the green foliage extends, there is no safe way to reduce the height without causing the damage described in this guide.
This is why Leylandii hedges, once allowed to grow unchecked, often have no practical management option short of removal. The top third or more of the hedge may consist entirely of bare brown stem with only a narrow band of green at the very tip - and cutting into that bare stem to achieve a meaningful height reduction is not a recoverable operation.

For Leylandii in particular, removal is often the most sensible long-term decision, especially where:
- The hedge has already been topped and the damage is done
- The hedge has grown so tall that meaningful height reduction would require cutting into bare brown wood
